JAMES BROWNE, MD

Course Director James Browne is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Vice-Chair of Clinical Operations, Division Head of Adult Reconstruction, and the Physician Lead of the Musculoskeletal Service Line at the University of Virginia. His clinical interests and expertise include complex primary and revision hip and knee replacement. Along with his clinical interests, he is actively involved with research encompassing all aspects of hip and knee replacement.  He is a member of both the Hip Society and Knee Society and served as the Program Chair of the AAHKS Annual Meeting in 2019.   He is currently an Associate Editor at the Journal of Arthroplasty and Chair of the Publications Committee for the American Joint Replacement Registry. 


MARC DEHART, MD

Marc M. DeHart, MD, FAAOS, FAOA is an Associate Professor in orthopaedic surgery specializing in Adult Hip and Knee Surgery and also holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine.  He is a Medical Officer in the Office of Health Technology for the Division of Arthroplasty the Center for Devices and Radiologic Health at the FDA.  With over 30 years of medical experience, he has practiced in military, academic, small and large group private practices.  He has been involved in organized medicine to further the profession and volunteered service as a member of AAOS Board of Councilors, AAOS Communications Cabinet, and served in the presidential line for the Texas Orthopaedic Association.  He has also served as the AAOS representative on multiple committees working to define both Medicare’s CMS MACRA Cost Measures as well as Clinical Performance Measures to help reward Orthopaedic surgeons for high value medicine.  He is the author of several articles and textbook chapters and serves on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Arthroplasty.  As an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UT Health San Antonio, he served as the Chief of Adult Reconstruction and especially enjoyed teaching medical students and residents.  He has spoken nationally at the most successful Orthopaedic review course in the country - Miller’s Colorado Orthopaedic Review Course – for over 20 years.  He is also the Co-course director for the Miller-JBJS Orthopaedic Review Course in Ryadh Saudi Arabia where he relishes the opportunity of learning how orthopaedic surgery is practiced outside the US and sharing in new cultures.  Dr. DeHart has been married for over 35 years and helped raise four grown children.  His hobbies include traveling and SCUBA diving.


MARK ERICKSON, MD, MMM

Dr. Mark Erickson is a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at The University of Colorado School of Medicine.  Dr. Erickson serves as the Fellowship Director for the Pediatric Orthopedic Fellowship Program and as Medical Director of the Spine program at Children’s Hospital Colorado.  Dr. Erickson completed his Orthopedic residency at Wright State University and his fellowship in Pediatric Orthopedic surgery at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.  Dr. Erickson is an original member of the Miller Review Course faculty.  Dr. Erickson lives in the Denver area and is married and has two children.


RACHEL FRANK, MD

Dr. Rachel Frank is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist who focuses on the surgical and non-surgical management of knee, shoulder, and elbow injuries.

Dr. Frank has specialized training and technical expertise in the areas of advanced knee and shoulder arthroscopy, ligament reconstruction, cartilage/meniscus restoration surgery, shoulder instability surgery, biologic treatments for musculoskeletal pathology, and care specific to the female athlete. Dr. Frank earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Illinois while playing 4 years of Division I Soccer, and her medical degree (MD) at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. She then completed her Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at the renowned Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL as well as a Sports Medicine and Shoulder Fellowship at Rush University Medical Center, where she assisted in taking care of the Chicago Bulls, Chicago White Sox, Chicago Fire Soccer Club, Chicago Steele (hockey), USA Rugby, and DePaul University.

Following her Sports Medicine fellowship, Dr. Frank completed a Traveling Fellowship throughout Canada and Europe, developing additional expertise in the areas of complex shoulder reconstruction, knee joint preservation surgery, advanced ligament repair and reconstruction, and techniques in OrthoBiologics. Currently, Dr. Frank serves as an Assistant Professor in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, is Director of the Joint Preservation Program at the University of Colorado, and is team physician for the Colorado Rapids professional soccer team.

Dr. Frank has authored or co-authored over 250 peer-reviewed journal articles, over 50 book chapters, and presents her research both nationally and internationally at orthopaedic conferences and meetings every year. Her research has garnered dozens of prestigious national and international awards, including the prestigious AOSSM Bart Mann Award for the Advancement of Sports Medicine Research, as well as several competitive grants, including funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH)l the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) and the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF).


F. WINSTON GWATHMEY JR, MD

Dr. Gwathmey joined the Sports Medicine Division of the University of Virginia Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in 2013.

After completing his Orthopaedic Surgery residency training at UVA, he underwent fellowship training in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School.  In Boston, he was an assistant team physician for the New England Patriots and also worked closely with the medical staff for the Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins.  

Dr. Gwathmey subsequently obtained additional hip arthroscopy training in Nashville, TN, with Dr. Thomas Byrd.  Dr. Gwathmey specializes in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy of the Shoulder, Hip, and Knee.  He is a team physician for UVA and James Madison University athletics as well as numerous high school teams.  He is also active in medical student and resident education winning numerous teaching awards..

His research interests include clinical outcomes after shoulder, hip, and knee arthroscopy, biomechanical analysis of the hip and knee joint, and the natural history of femoroacetabular impingement.  Dr. Gwathmey lives in the Charlottesville area with his wife, Kelly, daughter, Cate, and son, Robert.


STEVEN HADDAD, MD

Steven L. Haddad, MD attended college at the University of Michigan, graduating in 1985 with a degree in Honors Biology.  He attended The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, followed by a residency in orthopaedic surgery at Georgetown University.   He completed a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery in 1996 at the Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Fellowship Director Mark S. Myerson, MD.  He is currently a senior attending physician with Illinois Bone and Joint Institute, LLC, in Glenview, IL. He has received the James K. Stack Resident Teaching Award at Northwestern University in 2003.  He has also received the Roger Mann Award from the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society in 1996.  He has been named Best Lecturer for the Miller Orthopaedic Review Course four years in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2018. Dr. Haddad has worked extensively with both the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).  For the AOFAS, he was Chairman of the Young Physicians Section (2000-2001), Chairman of the Occupational Health Committee (2001-2003), and Chairman of the Education Committee (2007-2009).  He is an Assistant Editor for Foot and Ankle International, and Edited the Workers Compensation Manual for the AOFAS.  He is a current and past Program Chair for the AOFAS (2004-2005, 2018-2019), and the AMA Delegate for the Young Physicians Section (1998-2003). He developed and chaired the AOFAS Complications Course in 2007 and 2015, and has participated as faculty in numerous AOFAS courses and webinars.  Dr. Haddad is a past president of the AOFAS (2014). For the AAOS, Dr. Haddad has participated on the Foot and Ankle Evaluation Sub-Committee (1999-2006), as well as the Leadership Fellows Program (2004-2005).  He sat on the Professional Liability Committee (2005-2007), Foot and Ankle Program Subcommittee (2007-2013), and the Continuing Medical Education Courses Committee (2007-2012).  He was Chairman of the AAOS Annual Meeting Subsection on Foot and Ankle (2009-2013).  He was Section Editor for OrthoInfo (2007—2017), the patient information website for the AAOS.  He is the current chair of the Foot and Ankle Content Committee (sub-section of the Education Council) for the AAOS.  He has chaired the AAOS Advanced Techniques in Foot and Ankle Surgery Course, the Total Ankle Arthroplasty Course (three times), and the International Foot and Ankle Course.  He is the current President of the Board of Directors of the Orthopaedic Learning Center in Rosemont, IL. Dr. Haddad is married to Amy, and has 3 children.  When away from his practice, he enjoys cycling and playing paddle tennis.  He is an amateur American historian, and enjoys playing blues, jazz, and rock guitar, which he has been doing since age 10.  He is patiently awaiting his big break in music...for the past 45 years.


GINGER E. HOLT, MD

Dr. Ginger E. Holt is a Professor and Vice Chairman in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Holt completed her Orthopaedic Residency at Vanderbilt and Fellowships in MSK Oncology at Mt Sinai Hospital in Toronto and Adult reconstruction in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Holt is the Residency program director at Vanderbilt and Fellowship director for Musculoskeletal Oncology. Dr. Holt enjoys live music, pop culture and reality television shows.


SANJ KAKAR, MD

Sanj Kakar, MD is Professor of Orthopaedics, past Vice Chair of the Clinical Practice within the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Associate Medical Director for the Quality Academy at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. A graduate of St. Bartholomew’s and The Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry, he received his surgical training at University College London, The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and The Royal Free, before completing his Orthopaedic Residency at Boston University, Boston. After receiving his Master’s in Business Administration from Babson College, he completed his Hand Surgery fellowship at Mayo Clinic. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. He is a specialist in disorders of the hand and wrist, in particular, arthroscopy, complex wrist reconstruction, trauma and tumors of the upper extremity. He is a surgeon scientist in the fields of molecular biology and tissue engineering research specializing in the creation of “neoligaments” for wrist reconstruction, studying the role of 4 dimensional CT scanning on wrist kinematics and conducting molecular studies on the pathogenesis and treatment of Dupuytren’s disease and biology of fracture repair. Dr Kakar has authored over 170 peer reviewed scientific papers, 40 book chapters and co-editor of 3 books by the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.  He received the Marshall Urist Young Investigator award from the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons, is a member of the Emerging Leaders Program, a North American Traveling Fellow and American British Canadian Fellow and Chairs the Traveling Fellowship Programs by the American Orthopaedic Association, an active member within the American Association of Hand Surgeons and was the Chairman of the Residents and Fellows meeting at the American Society of Surgery of The Hand in 2015, Sterling Bunnell Traveling Fellow 2017-2018 and a Member at Large on the Council for the American Society for Surgery of The Hand from 2017-2020. He currently serves as the Hand.e Editor for the American Society for Surgery of The Hand.


ADAM KAUFMAN, MD

Dr. Kaufman attended Bucknell University and then Harvard Medical School. He completed his internship and residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Duke University Hospital. He then completed subspecialty fellowship training in orthopedic trauma surgery at University of Maryland's Shock Trauma Hospital. For the last 10 years, he has worked at Mission Hospital, a tertiary care trauma hospital in Asheville, NC. Dr. Kaufman's clinical interests include total hip replacement, surgery of the pelvis and acetabulum, elderly and pediatric fracture care, peri-articular fracture care, nonunion/malunion correction, post-traumatic reconstruction, and the treatment of musculoskeletal infections. He is a Surgeon Ambassador for the National Osteoporosis foundation and oversees Mission’s Fracture Prevention and Bone Health Clinic. Dr. Kaufman regularly teaches at OTA and AO courses. He is an active researcher and has presented lectures and published numerous articles on fracture surgery, post-traumatic total joint replacement, and soft tissue reconstruction.


CHRISTOPHER J. KLECK, MD

Dr. Christopher J. Kleck is one of the newer members of five Orthopaedic Spine Surgeons in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Colorado.  He trained at the University of Arizona and completed a fellowship in 2013 at The University of Colorado in Spine and completed a Traveling Fellowship in Lyon, France, prior to joining the University of Colorado Spine Division.  He has an interest in education at every level and was a high school teacher prior to entering the field of medicine.  He currently serves as the Spine Fellowship Co-Director, the Associate Residency Program Director as well as the Assistant Director for Medical Student Education.  In his spine practice, he and others engage in continuous evaluation of adult spinal deformity patients and their outcomes.  This ranges from the non-operative treatment to pre/post-operative planning and outcomes measures.  The practice is currently involved in several studies looking at global alignment, pelvic parameters, and the spine itself as well as techniques to allow for more precise implementation of surgical plans.  Dr. Kleck is a member of the following professional organizations:  American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), North American Spine Society (NASS), Colorado Orthopaedic Society, Clinical Orthopedics Society, International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery (ISASS), SICOT International, and Scoliosis Research Society (SRS).


EDWARD MCPHERSON, MD

Dr. Edward James McPherson is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He is board certified in orthopaedic surgery and specializes in total knee arthroplasty and total hip arthroplasty using the minimally invasive technique. He has published numerous articles on his specialty interests and has authored chapters on periprosthetic joint infection and adult reconstruction in medical textbooks. He has also co-authored book chapters on short stem design in total hip arthroplasty and cemented total knee replacement. Dr. McPherson is also very active in research endeavors. He has served as a principal investigator or co-investigator on more than 20 studies, several of which are still in progress. He has been an invited lecturer to national and international medical conferences and symposia, speaking on his specialty interests, and has served as an invited delegate at the International Consensus Meeting on Musculoskeletal Infection. Dr. McPherson is a member of The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, The American College of Surgeons, The Musculoskeletal Infection Society, The Societe Internationale Chirgue and Orthopaedic Traumatologie (SICOT), The Charleston County Medical Society, and The Association of Military Surgeons of the United States.


MARC J. RICHARD, MD

Marc Richard, MD is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Duke University in the Division of Hand, Upper Extremity and Microvascular Surgery.  He is originally from Cumberland, Rhode Island and graduated from Stanford University with a degree in Human Biology.  He then attended the University of Vermont College of Medicine and performed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Boston University Medical Center.  After completing a fellowship in Hand and Upper Extremity surgery at Duke University, he joined the faculty in 2007. Dr. Richard’s clinical focus includes upper extremity trauma, comprehensive elbow care, and osteonecrosis of the femoral head in young patients.  His additional specific interests include elbow arthroplasty, elbow injuries in young throwing athletes, and peripheral nerve injuries.  He has served as the Co-Director of Upper Extremity Trauma at Duke.  He is also the Co-Director of the Free Vascularized Fibular Graft Program at Duke and contributes clinically to both the Trauma and Hip Preservation Divisions.  He is the Director of the Hand and Upper Extremity Fellowship Program and is a past recipient of the Duke Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Teaching Award.  Dr. Richard is also a Past-President of the North Carolina Society for Surgery of the Hand. Dr. Richard is married with two children.  He enjoys spending time with his family and is an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan.


MATTHEW R. SCHMITZ, MD

Dr. Matthew R. Schmitz is a Colonel select in the United States Air Force.  He serves as Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at San Antonio Military Medical Center, the largest orthopaedics department in the Department of Defense.  He is also the Chief of Pediatric Orthopaedics/Adolescent Sports Medicine and Chief of the Young Adult Hip Preservation Service.  He graduated with honors from the US Air Force Academy and Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine and was the recipient of Loyola’s Early Career Achievement Award.  Dr. Schmitz was a standout collegiate rugby player and played with the USA National Rugby Team while in medical school.  He is currently a team physician for USA Rugby and serves as a medical consultant for the newly formed professional rugby league in America, Major League Rugby.  Dr. Schmitz has an extensive academic medical background lecturing nationally on a variety of topics, publishing research, and is an Associate Professor at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences along with Baylor University.  He is a previous recipient of the SAMMC Orthopaedics teaching award and has been inducted in the Order of Military Medical Merit for his contributions to military medicine. Dr. Schmitz has been lecturing for the MRC since 2010 and is involved with various committees for organizations including Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA), Pediatric Research in Sports Medicine (PRiSM), American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), along with serving in the presidential line of the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons (SOMOS).  Dr. Schmitz is married to an academic Emergency Medicine physician and has 2 wonderful daughters.


ADAM L. SHIMER, MD

Dr. Adam L. Shimer is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Spine Surgery at the University of Virginia. He was also Fellowship Director for the Orthopaedic Surgery of the Spine Fellowship from 2013 – 2019. Additionally, Dr. Shimer is the Spine doctor for both University of Virginia and James Madison University Athletics. Dr. Shimer’s training started with college at UVA, followed by medical school at UVA and Orthopaedic Surgery residency at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He completed an Orthopaedic Research fellowship at UPMC focused on cellular- and gene-based therapy for intervertebral disc repair and regeneration. After his Orthopaedic Spine Fellowship at the Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia, he joined the UVA faculty in 2009. Dr. Shimer’s practice is focused on complete care of neoplastic, infectious, traumatic, degenerative, and deformity conditions of the spine. He has extensive experience and particular interest in treating complex cervical spine pathology. His research interests include value base spine care, patient reported outcome measurements, and complications of spinal surgery. Dr. Shimer is the Orthopaedic In-Patient Unit Medical Director. He is a member of the Cervical Spine Research Society, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, North American Spine Society, and the Virginia Orthopaedics Society.


STEPHEN THOMPSON, MD

Stephen Thompson, MD, MEd, FRCSC is the cooperating associate professor of sports medicine at the University of Maine and a sports medicine orthopaedic surgeon at Eastern Maine Medical Center.  He completed his bachelor’s degree in physiology and master’s degree in medical education at the University of Toronto.  He then traveled the world and ultimately graduated from Sydney Medical School with honors.  Dr. Thompson completed his residency in orthopaedics at the University of Maryland/R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Institute program.  He then completed his first sports medicine fellowship at the Fowler-Kennedy Sports Medicine Clinic in London, Ontario and then his second at the Oakville Sports Injury Clinic in Oakville, Ontario. Dr. Thompson is a recognized expert in sports medicine.  He is the Co-Editor-in-Chief of the widely used and highly respected reference textbook DeLee and Drez’s Orthopaedic Sports Medicine.  Dr. Thompson has spent a significant time studying medical education and standardized testing.  He has applied this knowledge in his role as the Co-Editor-in-Chief of Miller’s Review of Orthopaedics, 6th edition as well as the 7th edition of Miller’s Review of Orthopaedics.  He has also written the Handbook of Splinting and Casting.  He is the co-founder and co-director of the Miller Review Course Part II:  Just In Case. Dr. Thompson’s clinical interests include shoulder instability and knee ligamentous injuries.  His research primarily focuses on anterior shoulder instability.


DAVID B. WEISS, MD

After finishing my Orthopaedic Trauma fellowship in 2005, I spent the next 5 years as the Medical Director for Orthopaedic Trauma at St Joseph Mercy Hospital, a level 2 trauma center in Ann Arbor, MI.  Since June 2010 I have directed the Orthopaedic Trauma Division at UVA and have enjoyed the challenge of providing complex fracture care to a wide spectrum of injured patients and working closely with the other trauma services at the hospital. I have had a lifelong interest in teaching and education and am able to fulfill this by interacting daily with our residents and medical students.

BRIAN WERNER, MD

Brian Werner, MD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia, where he specializes in sports medicine and shoulder reconstruction.  He is the fellowship director for the UVA Sports Medicine Fellowship and serves as the head orthopaedic team physician for James Madison University athletics.  He completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery, where he was a team physician for the New York Giants and the New York Red Bulls.

Dr. Werner has a significant interest in both clinical and basic science research, has published over 300 peer-reviewed papers on a wide variety of orthopaedic topics and has presented his research both regionally and nationally over 400 times. He has won numerous national awards for his research. His current research interests include clinical outcomes after knee and shoulder surgery, biomechanical studies in the knee and shoulder, shoulder arthroplasty and cartilage injury and repair.

Dr. Werner has numerous national leadership roles, and serves on the fellowship committee for the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, education and assessments committee for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and the research and abstract review committees for the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons society.
